Reiki is an ancient, sacred healing practice that emerged in the early 20th century through a Japanese spiritual teacher, monk, and samurai – Sensei Mikao Usui. In 1922, after a 21-day meditation and fasting retreat on Mount Kurama, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening and began to channel what we now know as Reiki. While he worked with sacred energies -sometimes represented by symbols – he did not originally teach or attune others to them as a core Reiki practice. His system was primarily focused on personal and spiritual development, with healing seen as a natural side-effect of aligning with the universal life force.

Usui Sensei’s teachings included mindfulness practices, energy cultivation exercises, and living in alignment with his Five Reiki Precepts. Some of his students – particularly Imperial Navy officers, such as Chujiro Hayashi – requested more hands-on healing techniques. For them, Usui introduced the use of symbols as a practical tool, though most of his other students accessed similar energies through Shinto mantras and Buddhist meditations, not symbols.

After Usui’s passing, it was Hayashi who formalized aspects of the system – introducing physical rituals that later became known as “attunements”. These were meant to mimic the energetic empowerments Usui had transmitted through pure intent. Hayashi passed this version to Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the West, where it evolved significantly. Western Reiki often emphasizes symbol-based attunements, which differ greatly from Usui’s original approach.

However, there is another story behind Reiki, one that reaches back thousands of years…

It takes us to Atlantis, the ancient, highly advanced civilization, and an ascended master known as Master R. He is said to have channeled 432 original ‘Reiki’ symbols to counteract and heal the tremendous disaster that took place – especially on the DNA level of humanity.
