Byosen (Byōsen Reikan-hō)

病腺

Sensing areas of imbalanced or accumulated energy in the body through the hands.

Byōsen (病腺) is the Japanese art of sensing, through the hands, where a person's energy has become imbalanced or congested. The full term, Byōsen Reikan-hō, means roughly "the method of feeling the sickness line" — a core diagnostic skill in traditional Usui Reiki.

What it feels like. As a practitioner holds their hands on or above the body, they learn to notice subtle sensations — tingling, heat or coolness, pulsing, heaviness, or a magnetic "pull." These are understood to mark areas where energy has accumulated or stagnated, drawing the Reiki to where it is most needed.

Hibiki. The specific sensation felt in the hands is called hibiki ("echo" or "resonance"). Its quality and strength are said to hint at how much attention an area is asking for. Practitioners are taught simply to stay, letting the energy flow until the sensation eases.

Developing the skill. Byōsen sharpens with practice and with the trust to follow what the hands report rather than the thinking mind. It naturally pairs with Reiji-hō, in which intuition guides hand placement.

Byōsen is a traditional, intuitive practice for guiding energy work — a way of listening with the hands, not a medical diagnosis.
