The Five Precepts (Gokai)
五戒
The five "just for today" precepts Mikao Usui gave as the ethical and spiritual heart of Reiki practice.
The Gokai (五戒) — the Five Reiki Precepts — are five short ethical intentions that Mikao Usui taught as the spiritual foundation of Reiki. Go means "five" and kai means "precepts" or "principles." Far more than rules, they are a daily practice for cultivating a calm, grateful, and present heart.
The five precepts. Each begins with "Just for today…" — an invitation to live one day at a time:
- Do not anger
- Do not worry
- Be grateful
- Work honestly (with diligence)
- Be kind to all living things
Origin. The earliest written form appears in the Reiki Ryōhō Hikkei, the manual used by Usui's own society in the early 1920s. Usui asked students to recite the precepts each morning and evening, often as a gentle chant, to keep them close to the heart.
In practice. The Gokai are considered the baseline of the whole system — a path of self-healing that grounds the energy work in everyday conduct and mindful attention.
