Hand Positions

The sequence of hand placements used to cover the body during a Reiki treatment.

Hand Positions are the placements through which a Reiki practitioner channels energy, resting the hands lightly on or just above the body in an unhurried sequence. They form the practical bedrock of the practice — the way ki is offered to both oneself and others.

The traditional set. A full treatment typically moves through a series of positions covering the head, the front and back of the torso, and sometimes the limbs — each corresponding to major organs and energy centers. Many modern practitioners align the positions with the seven main chakras: crown, third eye, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacral, and root.

Intuitive practice. While the structured sequence gives a reliable foundation, Reiki encourages listening inwardly and letting the hands be drawn to wherever attention is needed — honouring the unique needs of each person.

Alignment & touch. The fingers are kept gently together, relaxed and soft, so energy flows freely through the palm chakras. Contact is light and respectful; in distant healing, the positions may simply be visualized, since the energy is carried by intention rather than touch.

Hand positions are best held as a gentle framework, not a rigid rule — a steady map for a practice that ultimately follows intuition and the flow of energy.
