Mantra
मन्त्र
A sacred sound or phrase repeated to focus the mind and channel energy.
A mantra (मन्त्र) is a sacred sound, word, or phrase repeated to focus the mind and channel spiritual energy. The Sanskrit term joins manas (mind) and tra (instrument or protection) — "a tool of the mind," or "that which protects the mind" by giving it a still, sacred point to rest upon.
How it works. Through repetition — aloud, whispered, or silent — a mantra settles mental chatter, deepens concentration, and is said to attune the practitioner to the energy or quality the sound carries. The vibration of the sound is considered part of its power, not merely its meaning.
In Reiki. The spoken names of the symbols act as mantras — in Japanese, jumon, "words that invoke." Repeating a symbol's name three times calls its energy into the work, uniting sound, intention, and gesture.
Across traditions. Mantra is shared by yoga, Hinduism, and Buddhism — from the single syllable Om to longer invocations — each a doorway from the busy mind into stillness and connection.
A mantra is a contemplative tool for focus and presence — a sacred sound that steadies the mind and opens the heart.
