Rei

霊

The universal, spiritual-wisdom aspect of the word Reiki — the higher intelligence guiding the energy.

Rei (霊) is the first half of the word Reiki — the "universal" or "spiritual" aspect, paired with ki (life-force energy). Where ki is the energy itself, rei points to the higher, sacred intelligence that guides it. Translations include "spirit," "soul," "sacred," and "universal" — the sense of a wisdom greater than the personal self.

A guiding intelligence. This is why Reiki is often described as "spiritually guided life-force energy." The rei aspect is understood to direct the energy to where it is most needed, of its own accord — the practitioner does not have to decide or force the outcome, only to offer themselves as a clear channel.

Sacred, not personal. Because the guidance comes from this universal source rather than the practitioner's ego, traditional teaching emphasizes humility: the healer sets aside personal will and lets the higher wisdom lead.

In the kanji. The character 霊 carries layered meanings of spirit and the numinous, reflecting Reiki's roots in Japanese spiritual culture.

To understand rei is to understand the heart of Reiki: an energy that is not merely felt, but wisely guided.
