Reiki
霊気
A Japanese energy-healing practice in which a practitioner channels universal life-force energy through gentle hand placements.
Reiki (霊気) is a gentle, hands-on practice of spiritual and energy healing developed in 1920s Japan. The name joins two ideas: rei (universal, sacred) and ki (life-force energy) — often translated as "universal life-force energy." Practitioners act as a channel, placing their hands lightly on or just above the body to encourage a sense of balance, calm, and wellbeing.
Origin. Reiki was founded by Mikao Usui, who is said to have developed the system after a 21-day practice of meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama. In 1922 he opened his healing society in Tokyo and taught the method to thousands during his lifetime.
Meaning. The word itself signals its purpose — a sacred, universal energy that flows through all living things.
How it's used. A session is deeply relaxing: the recipient stays clothed while the practitioner uses a sequence of hand positions. Reiki is traditionally used to support relaxation and stress relief and is offered as a complementary practice.
Note
Reiki is educational and complementary — it is not a substitute for medical care or professional advice.
