Hindu god of transformation and dissolution.
Shiva (शिव) is one of the principal deities of Hinduism — the great god of transformation and dissolution within the Trimūrti. As the one who dissolves, he clears away the old and the outworn so that the new can arise; his destruction is not cruelty but renewal, the necessary ending that makes rebirth possible.
His symbolism. Shiva is the supreme yogi, seated in deep meditation on Mount Kailash; as Naṭarāja, the Lord of the Dance, he dances the cosmos through its cycles of creation and dissolution. The crescent moon, the serpent, the trident, and the sacred Ganges flowing from his hair are among his emblems.
In practice. Practitioners may honour Shiva for transformation, the release of what no longer serves, meditation and stillness, and the courage to let things end so that life may renew.
Honouring Shiva is a faith- and intention-based spiritual practice drawn from a living tradition — offered for reflection and reverence.
