Three Pillars of Reiki

Gassho, Reiji-ho, and Chiryo — the three foundational practices of Usui Reiki.

The Three Pillars of Reiki are the three foundational practices at the heart of the traditional Japanese system — the daily disciplines through which a practitioner cultivates and steadies their connection to the energy.

  • Gasshō (合掌) — "two hands together." Resting the palms together at the heart in meditation, centering the mind and arriving fully in the present before any healing begins.
  • Reiji-hō (霊示法) — "the indication of the spirit." Inviting the Reiki to guide the hands, then following intuition to where the energy is needed, rather than a fixed routine.
  • Chiryō (治療) — "treatment." The hands-on work itself: channeling Reiki through the hands to oneself or another.

A natural flow. Together they form a complete arc — center (Gasshō), attune to guidance (Reiji-hō), and give (Chiryō). One settles the practitioner, the next opens them to intuition, and the last lets the energy flow.

Why they matter. The Three Pillars keep Reiki rooted in presence, trust, and practice rather than mere technique. Returning to them keeps a practice alive and steady over the years.

They are less a set of rules than a rhythm — the steady heartbeat of a Japanese Reiki practice.
