Usui Reiki

The original Japanese system of hands-on energy practice founded by Mikao Usui in 1922.

Usui Reiki is the foundational system from which nearly all modern Reiki descends, developed by Mikao Usui (臼井甕男, 1865–1926) in early-1920s Japan. After a now-famous 21-day practice of prayer and fasting on Mount Kurama, Usui began teaching a method of working with universal life energy and opened his first clinic and school in Tokyo in 1922.

  • The founder's intent: Usui wanted a path of healing and spiritual growth unattached to any single religion, so it could be accessible to anyone. His memorial stone records that he taught Reiki to over 2,000 people.
  • More than technique: The original system rests on several elements — reiju (attunement), meditative practices, hands-on energy work, and the Five Precepts (Gokai), beginning "Just for today, do not worry; do not anger…".
  • Lineage: Among his students was Chūjirō Hayashi, whose work helped carry the system westward, giving rise to the many branches practised today.

Reiki is offered as a complementary, educational practice for relaxation and wellbeing — not as medical treatment.
