The Roots of Reiki

In the early 20th century, the Japanese samurai, monk, and master Mikao Usui gave birth to Reiki. In 1922, during a profound 21-day retreat of meditation and fasting upon Mount Kurama, Usui experienced a powerful spiritual awakening. During this time, he channeled four sacred symbols, enabling him to heal and perform miraculous acts. This moment marked the birth of the healing method we now call Reiki — a practice of connecting with the universal life force that flows through all Creation.

Yet Reiki was never solely about symbols or techniques. Usui's original teachings centered on spiritual refinement, mindful living, and personal alignment with the universal life force; healing was a natural byproduct of such alignment. Though he channeled sacred symbols during his awakening, they were not the ultimate goal but rather practical tools — shortcuts of sorts — designed to help practitioners access elevated states of consciousness more readily than through long years of meditative discipline. His core system emphasized Buddhist practices, meditative exercises, and the embodiment of the Five Reiki Precepts.

After his passing, his student Chujiro Hayashi helped structure certain elements of the practice, formalizing processes like attunements — ritualized empowerments designed to mimic the energetic transmissions Usui shared through pure spiritual intent. Through Hayashi's lineage, Reiki crossed oceans to the West via Hawayo Takata, where it evolved into a more symbol-focused tradition. This Western iteration, while effective, often diverged from the simplicity and spiritual purity of Usui's original vision.

And yet, beyond both these modern and historical narratives, Reiki's true origins seem to lie deep in the sacred past — woven into the esoteric traditions of Atlantis, ancient Tibet, and the wisdom of ascended masters whose guidance continues to ripple through time. One compelling account holds that during the fall of Atlantis, an ascended master known as Master R went to Tibet and intentionally channeled 432 original Reiki symbols to heal the distortions affecting human DNA — symbols that, over the ages, have been lost, concealed, or forgotten. Modern teachers identify Master R with the soul lineage of figures such as Moses, El Morya, and Saint Germain.
